<![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (17)

North Andover - On Sunday, April 14, 2024, loving husband, father, and grandfather James (Jim) Christopher Burke, 76, of North Andover, Massachusetts, passed away due to complications with Leukemia, surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Karen, by his three daughters and their husbands, whom he loved like his own sons, and his beloved four grandchildren; Jennifer and Joseph Barba and their children Grace and James of North Andover, MA; Jami and Damien Fischer and their children Emerson and Sloane of Los Angeles, CA; and Jillian and Reza Kashani of Los Angeles, CA.The only child of Hubert and Monica (McDowell) Burke, Jim came from humble beginnings. He learned the value of hard work and perseverance from his father, Hubert, who was raised in an orphanage and worked toward settling in North Andover. Jim grew up in a yellow house on Main Street, which he proudly still owns today. As a kid, he collected comic books and Lionel Trains. During his teenage years, he developed a love for classic cars, classic rock, and sports. Despite being a fair-skinned Irishman, he loved a perfect beach day, in his early years at Salisbury Beach and later as a regular at Cold Storage Beach in Dennis, MA. He was a passionate New England Patriots fan and loved college basketball, especially the Villanova Wildcats.Jim was an altar boy at St. Michael's Parish, and a graduate of North Andover High School and Lowell Technological Institute (now the University of Massachusetts, Lowell). He also earned an MBA from Northeastern University. He worked in Finance and Project Management for Textron Systems Corporation and Raytheon Technologies; he truly enjoyed his second career at Raytheon which led him to many new cities and taught him to maximize his road warrior status. He loved to travel for fun or for work and enjoyed the challenge of figuring out a new place. As a proud townie, he served on North Andover's town charter committee, and was dedicated to community service. On the weekends he could be found on the sidelines of many North Andover fields and courts, cheering on his kids, and later grandkids. He fondly reminisced of his days as the girls travel team soccer coach, often sharing that it was one of the most rewarding experiences that he shared with his girls and their friends. In retirement, he enjoyed meeting up with friends for coffee, walking around the neighborhood, monitoring the stock market, and exploring the "backroads" on drives around New England, and the Pacific Coast Highway in CA. He loved spending time with his family, especially at his favorite place - on the deck in his backyard at the Cape. His favorite time of day was "happy hour", ideally with a cold beer and a great sunset.Jim was a devout Catholic. Family was the most important thing to him and he is forever grateful for being included as a member of Karen's extended family which included the Armentis, Troianos, MacIlvanes, and Bourkes. He loved being a part of this big, fun, loving family. Finally, we would like to thank the doctors and nurses of Massachusetts General Hospital's Cancer Center who cared for Jim over the past few months, particularly the oncology nurses on Lunder 9 and 10, we are so grateful for your superior care, humor, and compassion.Family and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday April 18th at Conte Funeral Home, 17 3rd St, North Andover, MA 01845 from 4-7pm. <![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (29)

Haddam - Albert Lazaro Lara, 54, of Haddam, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Al was born on June 15, 1969, in Jamaica, Queens, New York, son of the late Gelasio Alberto and Magaly (Vega) Lara of Hialeah, FL. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 23 years Diane Ifkovic and his much beloved sons Alexander and Matthew Lara. He is also survived by his sister, Rita Lara and brother-in-law Daniel Kidorf of East Boston, MA; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Virginia Ifkovic of North Branford, Ct; sister-in-law, Denise Ifkovic of Jacksonville, Florida, former brother-in-law, Rustam Koralasbayev of Bethesda, MD; and niece, Kamila Koralasbayev of Gainesville, Florida. Al grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1987. He graduated from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1991, majoring in Government. He started his journalism career as a reporter for the Eagle-Tribune newspaper in Lawrence and was part of a team of staff reporters that was nominated for the 1996 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Reporting for coverage of the Malden Mills textile factory fire in 1995. He continued as a reporter working for the Hartford Courant, covering the JFK Jr. airplane crash off Cape Cod, the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, and was part of a team of staff reporters that won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting for coverage of the shooting rampage at the Connecticut lottery headquarters in Newington in 1998. Al was always proud of his Cuban heritage and mindful of his parents' struggles and sacrifices as immigrants which gave him and his sister better lives and opportunities in the United States. In 2000, the Hartford Courant sent Al on special assignment to Cuba to cover his parents' return to the island as a feature story entitled, "A Child of Cuba." He later focused on energy news which led to a position in media relations and communications at Eversource, formerly Northeast Utilities, for the last 20 years. His work at Eversource included handling media inquiries and press releases, storm response activities, transmission issues, company earnings, and assistance with the Special Olympics Winter Games and Hartford Marathon. Al was a lifelong learner and took interest in a wide range of subjects. He loved astronomy, history (especially World War II), art, airplanes, building models, boating, puttering in the yard, tending his blueberry bushes, relaxing in the hammock, and floating around the pool on a hot summer day. Al prided himself on keeping all kinds of old tools and scrap materials so he could fix any household problem. He was always on a quest for the perfect snow shovel or bug zapper. Al was also an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. His two sons Alex and Matthew were the love of his life. He reveled in helping them build giant models and intricate school craft projects or making elaborate Halloween costumes and Jack-o'-lanterns. He took pride in watching them both grow into successful young teenagers. In the last few years, he loved attending their cross country and track meets, sharing in their successes in these sports. When his sons were younger, he attended every soccer and little league baseball game. He was lucky enough to see his son, Alex attend Wesleyan University which brought him abundant pride. If you were lucky enough to know him, you know how incredibly special he was. He was a fighter up until the very end, and he did it with bravery and dignity. He passed peacefully, surrounded by the people he cared about most. We are beyond grateful to have been there with him, surrounding him with our love and support. Although our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that Al is now free to explore the mysteries of the cosmos, as one of his passions was astronomy. He was an amazing father, husband, brother, friend, and neighbor. He will forever be missed and never forgotten. Calling hours will be held on Thursday (April 25th) at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown CT, 06457 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Following calling hours, a funeral Mass will be held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church, 10 Elm Street, Middletown, CT, 06457 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider donating in Al's name to the American Cancer Society, The Lustgarten Foundation or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. <![CDATA[The Eagle-Tribune: Obituaries]]> (57)

Bedford - Donald Richard White, 85, of Bedford, MA and formerly Groveland, MA passed away peacefully on March 20, 2024, at his home.He was born in Haverhill, MA on October 3, 1938, son of Maynard H. and Agnes L. (Akeroyd) White. In his final moments, the former University of Notre Dame quarterback called a "4th-and-1" goal line audible ... #6, his number. He leapt over the top of the line and soared mercifully into the Kingdom of God – scoring a final touchdown.Heaven's playground just got a lot more fun.Don grew up on Brookline Avenue in Haverhill and spent his youth playing sports at Walnut Square Elementary School. His father, Maynard, with legendary "working man's mitts," taught him the value of hard work; his mother, Agnes, a gregarious free spirit, gifted him his buoyant personality and infectious smile. Don went to Haverhill High School and was a three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. As a senior, he received The Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic honors for all three sports. In 1955, Don led the Haverhill "Hillies" to victory in the Massachusetts Football State Championships. He accepted a football scholarship to the University of Notre Dame where he played quarterback for the Fighting Irish from 1956 to 1960. His pride and passion for his alma mater was obvious until the end: wearing Notre Dame clothing and belting out rousing renditions of "Here Come the Irish" and "Wake Up the Echoes" were daily rituals. After graduating from Notre Dame, Don married Maureen Linnehan and they were blessed with four children, Geralyn, Kevin, Brian, and Christopher. Family and friends, teaching and coaching, food and fight songs were constants in Don's life. He loved coaching Little League baseball and driving his gold '72 Plymouth Sebring Plus with Arlo Guthrie's City of New Orleans, any Beatles song or Simon and Garfunkel song blasting from his 8-track player. In the "cooking arena" Don will always be remembered for his masterfully smoked turkeys, gourmet "Donnie Burgers," and his legendary football tailgates.Professionally, Don was a lifelong teacher (history, social studies, and current affairs) and coach (football, golf, and girls' softball) at Timberlane, Lynn Classical, and Belmont High Schools. He enjoyed developing relationships with his students which led to his perfecting Mrs. Manfredi's meatball recipe and two generations of dogs named Muzzi, after Dante Muzzioli, a student, coach, and friend.During his retirement, Don worked in many capacities at the Patriot Golf Course in Bedford, MA. His love of sport, community, and camaraderie made his work at Patriot a 20-year match made in heaven. Golfers referred to him lovingly as "Coach" and he cherished the many friendships he made from this partnership.Don and his wife Claire shared 42 years of marriage and many interests. They both loved clothes -- and Don became the family haberdasher and fashion critic. They also loved co*cktail hour and hors-d'oeuvres, home cooked meals, roaring fires in the winter, Maine beaches in the summer, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra.Don lived a wonderful life and was known by many names. His teammates at Notre Dame knew him as "Hot Dog." His students knew him as "Mighty Whitey", "Notre Dame Donnie," and "Don Juan." His players knew him as "Coach," and the outpouring of love from former players is testament to his character as a man, teacher, and coach. His grandchildren knew him as "Pappy" — they eagerly awaited his trademark bear-hug greeting and the annual White Family Whiffle Ball Game in Maine, when he masterfully pitched for both teams. His children called him "Dad."The thread that ties these nicknames together is people. Don White was a people person who thought everyone was "terrific," and people loved Don White. The most impactful lesson he taught his children was "The Human Touch Always Wins." May we embrace his legacy and aspire to touch as many lives as "Coach-Hot Dog-Pappy" Donald Richard White.Donald is survived by his loving wife, Claire E. Austin White and his four children, Geralyn A. Dreyfous of Salt Lake City, UT; Kevin D. White and his wife, Anne R. Giordano of Ridgefield, CT; Brian J. White and his wife Salli of Bowling Green, OH; and Christopher M. White and his wife Angel of Memphis, TN. He is also survived by his two brothers, Gerald P. "Gerry" White and his wife, Ann of Bradford, MA and Maynard C. "Chuck" White and his wife Darla of Jacksonville, FL. He was the loving Pappy to 10 grandchildren: John "Jake" Dreyfous, McKarah Dreyfous, Jarrett G. White, Aubrey G. White, Gavin G. White, Tessa G. White, Cassi White, Jackson White, Payton White and Riley White. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Friday April 26th from 4 to 6 p.m. in the H.L. Farmer & Sons Bradford Funeral Home, 210 South Main Street, Bradford, MA. The Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday April 27th at 10:30 a.m. in the Sacred Heart Parish, 165 South Main Street, Bradford, MA.
