The first time I made dairy-free chocolate mousse was when I hosted a Bunco night at my house. It was shortly after I began eating dairy-free. I knew I wanted some sort of sweet chocolate dessert that was single serving.

You only need FOUR ingredients to make this vegan chocolate mousse:

  • full-fat coconut milk or coconut cream - this replaces the dairy but adds so much richness. It's such a simple and delicious one-to-one substitution. And, it works perfectly when creating almost any chocolate dessert.
  • cocoa powder - to add that chocolatey goodness. And most cocoa powder is vegan.
  • vanilla extract - for more flavor depth.
  • powdered sugar - this gives the mousse a nice sweetness and helps it from becoming grainy.

✅ Step-by-step directions

Exact measurements of ingredients and instructions are in the printable recipe card toward the bottom of this post. Here are some helpful tips to guide you as you make this recipe.

There's a little bit of prep work in making this, in that you'll want to refrigerate a can of coconut milk overnight. You can also use coconut cream, but I have found that it's easier to find 15-ounce cans of full fat coconut milk.

Coconut cream tends to be sold in 8-ounce cans, and is not as common in general grocery stores across the US.

1. Once you're ready to make the recipe, remove the bowl and the can of coconut milk from the refrigerator. Open the can and skim off only the thick cream into the stand mixing bowl. Reserve the rest for smoothies, soups, and other recipes.

2. Add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar to the mixing bowl.

3. Mix all ingredients on medium until whipped into a thicker cream the consistency of mousse.

4. If necessary, add more powdered sugar. Serve!

💡 Optional: Add mini chocolate chips. I love the added crunch and texture that the mini chips bring to this dessert.

👩🏻‍🍳 Recipe FAQs

Is cocoa powder vegan?

Yes! If you purchase the kind that is in the baking aisle, chances are more likely that the cocoa powder you purchased is vegan. It's made by processing the cacaobeans under high heat, and typically does NOT have any animal byproducts added.

How do you fix grainy chocolate mousse?

To help avoid grainy mousse, use powdered sugar. If you already have a grainy mousse, you may be able to fix it by re-melting your mixture, adding a bit more cream, and whisking it again. Too much whisking can separate the cream and start to form a grainy, buttery texture, so be careful not to overdo it.

🍽 How to serve

Dairy Free Chocolate Mousse Recipe | Urban Bliss Life (4)

When I make this just for me and my family, I'll keep it in a big covered bowl in the refrigerator.

For parties, however, I like to serve this dairy-free chocolate mousse in individual shot glasses, small single serving bowls, or even champagne coupe glasses.

The presentation alone is super adorable, but offering single serving desserts alsomake it easy for guests to enjoy and still mix and mingle.

Instructions

  • Chill the can of coconut milk in the refrigerator overnight.

  • For best results, place your stand mixer bowl in the refrigerator for 10-30 minutes before you make the chocolate mousse shots.

  • Once you're ready to make the recipe, remove the bowl and the can of coconut milk from the refrigerator.

  • Open the can and skim off only the thick cream into the stand mixing bowl. Reserve the rest for smoothies, soups, and other recipes.

  • Add the cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar to the mixing bowl.

  • Mix all ingredients on medium until whipped into a thicker cream the consistency of mousse. If necessary, add more powdered sugar.

  • Serve immediately.

  • Optional: top with mini dairy-free chocolate chips.

Notes

Makes between 6-10 servings, depending on how much cream your can of coconut milk yielded. You can easily double this recipe to make more!

Party serving idea: spoon into double shot glasses. Or you could get fancy and pipe the mousse into double shot glasses, as shown in the photos here, into mini dessert bowls, or even champagne coupe glasses.

This chocolate mousse will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days but is best eaten within 1-2 days. I do NOT recommend attempting to freeze vegan chocolate mousse.

I’m new at finding and making dairy free recipes but this one is amazing! My guests did not know that this was vegan - and very low in calories - until I told them. My husband - a chocoholic - was also fooled. Definitely a recipe that I will make again and again!

I make a similar dessert with white chocolate. I wonder if the coconut milk would change the flavor, which is extremely delicate. I'll definitely give this a try.

FAQs

Why is my chocolate mousse not fluffy? ›

That could be because the cream is too cold, making the melted chocolate clump together. Or it could be because you beat the eggs too much. Homemade mousse can also be too thick and heavy, without the light airiness you'd hope for.

When making a chocolate mousse Why does melted chocolate need to be warm when the whipped eggs or cream are added? ›

The melted chocolate should not be hot because the eggs will curdle when added. Nor should it be cold because the eggs won't incorporate smoothly. Make sure the melted chocolate is at body temperature.

Does chocolate mousse contain butter? ›

While it uses only a few ingredients, chocolate, eggs, butter, vanilla, and heavy cream, its chocolate flavor is rich and its texture is silky smooth and airy, almost foamy. And foamy is an apt description as "mousse" is French for 'froth' or 'foam'.

Does chocolate mousse contain cream? ›

Mousse is one of the most rich and decadent desserts and is often made with chocolate. Either whipped cream or beaten egg whites (sometimes both!) are folded into a mixture of melted chocolate, egg yolks, and sugar, then chilled.

What are common mistakes when making mousse? ›

Common mistakes when making mousse (and how to fix them)

It's easy to remelt the chocolate in the microwave until smooth and try again. A grainy mousse is also a result of overbeating so only beat for 1-2 minutes, or until the mixture resembles lightly whipped cream.

What can I add to mousse to make it thicker? ›

Don't overdo it when it comes to thickening. Try adding a small amount of cornstarch to a little water, and add it to the mousse a little at a time and see how it thickens the texture.

Why add heavy cream to melted chocolate? ›

Semi-Sweet Chocolate: I really like Bakers brand chocolate bars, but Ghirardelli is another great option. You may also use semi-sweet chocolate chips in this recipe, which I'll explain later. Heavy Cream: Also known as heavy whipping cream, this helps to thin out the chocolate.

What happens if you add cream to melting chocolate? ›

If you must add a liquid (such as heavy cream or milk), heat up the liquid first, then add the chocolate. The chocolate will melt more evenly and distribute into the liquid. Don't cover the bowl. This may cause condensation, which could drip water droplets into the melted chocolate.

Do you need cream of tartar for mousse? ›

Cream of tartar's most popular use is to stabilize egg whites, making them less likely to deflate in dishes like meringues and mousses, but there are other uses for it too.

Is it safe to use raw eggs in chocolate mousse? ›

Mousse recipes that use raw eggs should be modified by heating the milk, eggs and sugar to 160 degrees F. Hillers recommends any recipe calling for raw eggs should be modified to either heat the eggs or to substitute a modified egg product. If your recipe can't be modified, Hillers advises finding a substitute recipe.

What can I use instead of cocoa powder in mousse? ›

Carob powder is often used as a cocoa substitute in baked and no-bake goods such as cake, brownies, cookies, fudge, and mousse. Because of its sweet and mild flavor, it is also great in recipes that don't require much sugar, such as pancakes, oatmeal, and ice cream shakes.

What is a substitute for egg yolks in mousse? ›

Aquafaba – this works great in mousse – replace egg whites 1:1 – whip it first like you would egg whites, to stiff peaks, and you can replace any yolks in a mousse recipe with tapioca or cornstarch. Then fold the two mixes together to create a light, fluffy egg free mousse.

What's the difference between chocolate pudding and chocolate mousse? ›

Traditionally, pudding gets its thick consistency from being cooked (which activates the cornstarch), while mousse is not cooked. Texture: Because these two creamy desserts use different methods of thickening, the texture also varies. Pudding is semisolid and more dense, while mousse has a lighter, airier texture.

How do you keep mousse Fluffy? ›

Water lightens the mousse

Cream contains about 80% water, so adds a significant amount of water to the mousse (as do eggs by the way). This water is necessary to lighten up the mousse and make it capable of holding onto that air. Just fat would make for a very heavy and dense dessert.

How do you fix mousse that didn't set? ›

Gelatin: This classic option works effectively. Simply sprinkle some powdered gelatin (around 1/2 teaspoon for every 2 cups of mousse) onto the surface of the runny mousse. Let it sit for a few minutes to bloom, then gently fold it into the mixture. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours to set.
