Side dishes tend to fall into two camps. They either accent the main event, or, a collection of a few of them create a meal in itself. Think of mezze. In fact, I often feel like side dishes are the best part of a meal. Whatever your approach, you’ll find a wide range of sides here. Many can do double duty as either a side or main.

Caramelized Fennel on Herbed Polenta

A creamy, herb-flecked polenta spiked with Pecorino, and topped with caramelized slabs of pan-seared fennel. A favorite recipe from Sarah Britton's beautiful My New Roots cookbook.

Instant Pot Fiasco Beans

What this pot of Instant Pot beans lacks in looks, it makes up for in flavor, simplicity, and deliciousness! A take on Italian fa*gioli al fiasco.

Nikki’s Sweet Potatoes

Decadent, delicious baked sweet potato recipe made from seven ingredients - sweet potatoes, ginger, coconut milk, shredded coconut, maple syrup, macadamia nuts and a bit of butter or olive oil.

Lentil Polenta Casserole

If you've got these two components, and you have five minutes, you can get a dinner like this in the oven, pronto.

Smash-and-Toss Roasted Potato Salad

A flavor-forward potato salad you can make a meal of - French lentils, sun-dried tomatoes, ginger, garlic, almonds, and basil. All together. In one beautiful roasted potato salad.

Stuffed Shells

A stuffed shells recipe made with lemon zest and bright tomato sauce. Classic, with a hint of a twist. Everyone loves them.

Red Lentil Dumplings

I have one more day in Hong Kong before flying back to San Francisco, and I thought I'd jot off a quick post for those of you who like to see what I pack to eat when I travel. Red lentil dumplings flared out with roasted cherry tomatoes, and a simple smoked paprika and garlic oil.

Lazy Day Peanut Noodle Salad

A peanut noodle salad recipe featuring soba noodles punctuated with spring onions, tofu, peanuts, and asparagus. Serve it up family-style on a platter at a potluck, party, or buffet - it holds up perfectly at room temp.

Asparagus Panzanella

A simple asparagus panzanella - a quick, mustard buttermilk dressing accents good asparagus, alongside crusty shards of toasted bread, and a dusting of sesame seeds. Shred a hard boiled egg over the top and you've got an even more substantial meal.

Diana Henry’s Uzbeki Carrots

The most interesting carrot recipe I've attempted in a long time - infused with fragrant spices like saffron, cumin, and cinnamon. Punctuated by dried fruit, savory from caramelized onions and tomatoes, with spots of fresh, green herbaceousness from mint, and chiles, and cilantro. Things just get increasingly delicious from there.
