Lo primero que hicimos al día siguiente después de levantarnos y vestirnos es llamar a un Uber (nos movíamos así o a pie por la ciudad) para que nos llevara hasta el cartel de Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas, una señal de cerca de 8 m de altura que fue diseñada en 1959 por Betty Willis a petición de un empresario local que más tarde se la vendería al condado de Clark por 4.000$.

Un viaje a Las Vegas no es un viaje si no os habéis podido sacar una foto junto a este famoso cartel, y ¿sabéis qué? hace 21 años, cuando vinimos a Las Vegas por primera vez, no lo hicimos. Aunque parezca una tontería mola mucho, y encima es una de las cosas gratis que hacer en Las Vegas. Su popularidad es tan grande que es probable que tengáis que hacer una larga cola para poder haceros la clásica foto junto al cartel, pero nosotros llegamos muy temprano y no había casi nadie, además, os doy un truco por si hay mucha gente, si os fijáis en la foto de arriba, la de la izquierda está sacada desde un lateral, mientras alguien nos guardaba la cola, y apenas hay diferencia con la de la derecha que es la que se saca de frente.

Una vez explicado esto, que creo que es casi lo primero que hay que hacer en Las Vegas, aunque a priori puede parecer que hay poco qué ver y hacer en Las Vegas y que allí solo se puede malgastar dinero en casinos o mujeres de compañía, lo cierto es que, la ciudad de Las Vegas vive un fenómeno sociológico único en el mundo, siendo la ciudad de Estados Unidos que más ha crecido en los últimos 20 años.

En 1931 el juego se legalizó en Las Vegas, comenzando así su fama mundial y se empezaron a construir los primeros casinos. Desde los años 50 se ha complementado el juego de los casinos con espectáculos musicales en Las Vegas, de ahí nació la comunión que siempre hubo entre Elvis Presley y la ciudad.

Aunque ya había algunos hoteles fuera del Downtown, no fue hasta 1989 cuando se comenzó a construir desmesuradamente, dando lugar al conocido “Strip”, 16 kilómetros de calle donde se congregan los hoteles más espectaculares de la ciudad, construidos muchos de ellos a modo de réplica de ciudades como New York, París, Roma o Venecia.

Visitar The Strip en Las Vegas o Las Vegas Boulevard (mide unos 6,8 km desde Sahara Avenue hasta Russell Road), es visitar la arteria principal de la ciudad y es estar en el punto exacto donde se encuentran casi todas las cosas que visitar de Las Vegas, es decir sus casinos y hoteles.

El primer hotel que nos encontramos, muy cerca del cartel deWelcome to fabulous Las Vegas, es el Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, donde nos alojamos en 2001,el único hotel que dispone de playa artificial (pagando la podréis disfrutar aunque no estéis alojados en el casino) y zona para practicar surf en medio del desierto. Además poseeel acuario Shark Reef, que dispone de unos 2.000 tipos de criaturas acuáticas entre las que se encuentran 15 especies de tiburones, variedad de peces exóticos y especies en peligro de extinción como los cocodrilos dorados. Tanto la playa como la entrada al acuario es gratis para los que os alojéis allí, y nosotros los disfrutamos en 2001.

El siguiente hotel que aparece en el Strip es el Hotel Luxor, fácil de distinguir gracias a su enorme pirámide de color negro (cuya luz a la noche es una de las más potentes del mundo), la esfinge que lo acompaña y otros símbolos que inevitablemente evocan Egipto.

Cuando se construyó el Luxor en 1993, la pirámide de 30 pisos era el edificio más alto de Las Vegas, y actualmente el hotel posee 4.408 habitaciones (entre la pirámide y las torres adyacentes), cuatro piscinas y un casino de más de 11.000m², cifras que lo convierten en uno de los hoteles más grandes del Strip.

Algunos hoteles entramos por el día, a otros por la noche, y otros, como el Mandalay, los vimos por fuera nada más.

A continuación aparece el Excalibur Hotel and Casino,ubicado en un edificio en forma de castillo, inspirado en el castillo de Carcassonne del Sur de Francia, y allí podréis ver el espectáculo Tournament of Kings, una cena con espectáculo donde valientes caballeros se baten en duelo.

El hotel Excalibur se construyó en 1990, pero se remodeló en el 2000. Dispone de 3.991 habitaciones, 2 piscinas y 9.000m²de casino. El hotel Excalibur no es uno de los hoteles más lujosos ni céntricos, pero sí es de los más baratos.

Seguimos hasta llegar alNew York-New York Hotel & Casino,alrededor del que está la montaña rusa Roller Coaster at New York-New York, la única de Las Vegas, una atracción que alcanza los 100 km/h y que probamos en 2001 (el precio nos pareció desorbitado para repetir).

El hotel, como no podía ser de otro modo, está ambientado en la ciudad de New York y si entráis os dará la impresión de estar paseando por el ambiente de la Gran Manzana,Greenwich Village, el Bronx, Brooklyn, o Little Italy pero a kilómetros de allí.

Las 2.023 habitaciones del hotel se sitúan en las 12 torres que sobresalen detrás de la montaña rusa y recrean los rascacielos más famosos como el Empire State Building, el Chrysler Building, el Century Building o el Ziggurat, pero también está la Estatua de la Libertad, el Puente de Brooklyn o la Gran Central Station, como no.

Delante de la fachada del hotel, en una zona al aire libre, se encuentra una plaza repleta de tiendas, restaurantes con patios y puestos de hamburguesas. Justo al lado del hotel encontraréis The Park, el primer parque para socializar al aire libre en Las Vegas.Nosotros comimos en el Shake Shack de las inmediaciones del hotel New York New York, pues las probamos en NYC y nos gustaron mucho.

Cruzando The Strip tenemosel hotel MGM Grand Las Vegas, uno de los hoteles más conocidos porque es el hotel más grande de la ciudad y ha sido el más grande del mundo hasta el año 2006, pues cuenta con 5.034 habitaciones, pero sumando las suites de las torres adyacentes, se llega casi a las 7.000 habitaciones.También es conocido porque aquí se celebran los combates de boxeo más importantes del mundo.

Muy cerca de allí, en elShowcase Mall, hay varias tiendas interesantes, como la Coca Cola Store, un edificio para los fanáticos de la marca de bebidas más emblemática del mundo repleta de productos exclusivos de la marca Coca Cola (accesorios, ropa, figuras, etc), y que posee una botella de Coca Cola gigante en la fachada.

Casi al lado está la M&M's Store, una tienda de dulces temática, colorida e interactiva que vende caramelos, ropa, artículos decorativos y regalos de la marca M&M's.

Visitamos la de Londres (la que más nos gustó), la de Nueva York y ahora esta porque están bastante chulas, son muy fotogénicas y no se tarda mucho en verlas.
